Today was our final day in Little Corn, Paradise.  We woke up exhausted, feeling a bit sick and with a thick humid air from all the wet clothes, that made me feel claustrophobic.   I looked outside our very tiny window and it was raining.  It was the kind of slow, cold rain that silenced the birds and would have been perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon somewhere in the US; but not today, not for our last morning in paradise.  I had read previously on the internet that when it rains, the Pangas (the little boats) that carry us over to Big Corn don’t operate.  This is a lie.  From what I heard from the locals, there has to be a Hurricane in order for them to not operate.  We hurried to get ready and ran to the Panga that was already boarding.  And just like that, we left Paradise.  In reality, we were sad to leave, but ready.  The trips across the jungle and the diving really took a toll on us, physically. We were tired and burnt out.

Here’s a brief recap of our experience in Paradise, by the numbers:

•    7: trips taken across the mosquito battlefields of the jungle
•    4: times getting lost(always on the way back to Derek’s Place)
•    5: total hours lost.
•    2: Impromptu sunset walks along the beach (While lost)
•    9: Combined dives we took.
•    7: Sharks seen
•    407: minutes total time underwater (combined)
•    1: (and first) underwater fight with the wife
•    1: very unsuccessful “fishing expedition from hell” where I almost threw up my entire stomach
•    8”: size of biggest fish caught during above mentioned failed expedition
•    3: Beaches visited
• 1/2: Population of Island that has Downs as last name.
•    0 Regrets!

When we got to Big Corn Island, we took a taxi directly to Casa Canada.  There we were greeted by Don once again.  We took a room and man, it was sooooo nice!  It looked even nicer since we were used to our humble love shack made of straw and wood.  We were back to civilization!  Satellite TV!  A refrigerator! King sized bed!  A/C!!!  Woohoo!  And even some leather couches!  The first thing we did was take a HOT shower and then pass out like we hadn’t slept in days.  If little corn had these types of accommodations, it would be perfect; but then again, it wouldn’t feel like that raw, virgin island that it is.  Casa Canada is possibly the best place to stay at in Big Corn Island.  It has plenty of beautiful details that make it a pleasant stay.  It’s very clean and very well kept.

After we have rested from all our treks through the jungle, we decided to take another cab and visit PicNic Beach again.  The beach was deserted, except for the occasional kids that would walk on by.  Monica wanted to go in, but after being underwater all week, I just wanted to be above it and lay on actual sand.  I laid and closed my eyes.  There were no crashing waves, no seagulls, no wind, no loud tourists’ voices, no, there was nothing but a tranquility and peace that this serene blue beach offers. All I needed was a harp to be playing somewhere in the background as I laid there walk awake, half asleep, in complete laziness.  But I got something better instead, I half opened my eyes and saw a hot chick walking around in a sexy bikini.  That awoke me and I grabbed my camera and started taking pictures.  “You’re a tiger! You’re a tiger!” I would say to that hot wife of mine. Soon enough, a large crowd of teens and men made their way towards us (talk about getting attention) and I knew it was time to go.  They started playing soccer and we packed up and left the beach and made our way to another beach in front of another hotel.  There, we were asked to pay five whole American dollars per person if we wanted to enjoy the sun in their beach chairs.  We left to Casa Canada.

monkey-sign

Pay attention to the sign!

At a approximately 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Monica, the damsel in distress, got attacked by a hairy monkey.  The victim did not properly heed the warnings signs to not pet the monkey.  “Earlier the monkey was very nice and calm,” she explained after she was heroically rescued by her loving and good looking husband; (yours truly of course).  I guess that by the late afternoon he had been petted, bothered and probably spanked way too much that he was just pissed off.  He was an angry monkey with a vendetta against humanity.  He came over to Monica, scheming, plotting his revenge, seeking out his first victim, innocently he laid on Monica’s lap, pretending to want to be petted.  And then that maniacal monkey from the bowels of hell attacked!  It was like a modern day, hair raising, stomach churning, King Kong movie where I had to save the hot chick from being eaten alive by the aforementioned evil primate!  The monkey struck again, over and over, but luckily did not break any skin.  He then retired to his dungeon where he is surely planning another attack.  Monica was a bit shaken up but was in good spirits saying “I love monkeys.”

Before the vicious monkey attack...

After the incident we went back to our really cool honeymoon suite and slept some more.  At night we went to dinner at the little bar and restaurant section and had Don’s Special which is not even in the menu because is that special.  It consisted of a heavy dose of seafood, beef and chicken.  This meal had everything on it.  And it knocked me out, so back to sleep.
