Tecumseh’s full poem from Act of Valor movie

Saw the movie Act of Valor tonight.  At the end, it had this amazing poem by Native American Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh.  I wanted to share it with you all.  It’s truly amazing and I hope that it inspires you to make this life count, to pursue noble undertakings, and live so that when it’s time to be called Home, you have used all your talents and have no regrets.

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
Trouble no one about their religion;
respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours.
Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.
Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people.
Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend,
even a stranger, when in a lonely place.
Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself.

Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools
and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled
with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep
and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way.
Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

  2. Ive been struggling with many “self pitty” issues and after seeing the movie last night, I realized the sacrifices others have made WILLINGLY so that I could have this precious life this long and for a long time to come!
I had to google the poem as just hearing it once had a profound impact on me in a very positive way!
    Thank you

  4. Thank you so much for posting this. I have long held the members of our Armed Forces in my heart, and with very high regard. My family saw the movie this afternoon and we were all moved by it, all emotional at the end. I hope it will bring others to a better understanding or appreciation for all that they do, all tha they and their families sacrifice. To any and all members of the military, and their families, thank you for your service and sacrifice.

  5. Never thougth I would find this poem so easily. My son and I saw the movie today. The poem at the end says it all. I am still trying to absorb the movie and process the amazing acts of Valor. I am X-Navy, although not a seal, I feel as though I went through similar scenario’s and I must say that everyone needs to understand what our military does for our freedom, way of life and quality of living. Those that did not serve…..that is OK……….but always know that America is the greatest place on our earth….not perfect……..but the best you will every come to know. There is no other place to be than here, we guard against the incoming……..most countries try to keep there citizens to stay and promote people to come there way, they don’t have issues with people wanting to come in, they guard against people trying to leave. Thanks to all and live the life you choose, dream big, never give up, don’t judge and forgive even when you don’t want to. The truth will certainly set you free.

  6. Outstanding movie! The SWCC boat crews were amazing in their execution of maneuvers. I enjoy reading this poem very much and pray I will go “home” a hero in my families eyes one day…..

  7. This is truly an amazing poem. I just watched the movie Act of Valor last night and it was pretty good. Straight after the movie, I Googled for this poem and sharing it on my website too.

  8. What a truly powerful and amazing movie this was. As a close friend to many members of our military, including one of the SEALs from the movie, I was brought to tears. What a profound moment it was when the film ended and every person in the packed theater just sat there in complete silence until the credits came to an end. THAT is how people should feel about our military at all points of the day. It saddens me that it took a movie for most to gain a respect for our military, however I am glad that many more now realize the importance of those who willingly give up everything in service of our country.

    Never Forget

  10. Thank you for making this so easy to find. When I heard it at the end of the movie (Act of Valor) it brought tears to my eyes. I sometimes think that as I am growing older I am becoming more soft-hearted. But to realize there are people who are willing to sacrifice their lives for our freedoms is something for which we should all have a greater appreciation.
