What to name our baby

stork girl

Ok, so Monica and I are flip flopping back and forth as to what we should name our daughter.  We thought we were set on what were going to name her.  I even made a public declaration of her name (I wrote about it here).  But it seems that sometimes we are being given that proverbial advice to “give the kid a chance and don’t ruin her name”.  Are we that crazy that the names we have chosen for her only make sense to us?  Whenever we tell someone her proposed name,  we sometimes  get a “that’s different” response or a blank stare.  Yeah, a blank stare that says, “Huh?!?”   Most people like the names we have chosen, but the blank stares we sometimes get makes us second guess ourselves.

So, in a effort to gain some common sense, I’ve decided to see what everyone thinks of the names we have also considered.  As of right now, the top choice is Sirena Venezia.   But we are strongly considering these two names:

Seanna.  There are two reasons I love this name.  First, it means “God is Gracious”; second, it seems like a suitable replacement for “Sirena” because it contains the word “Sea” which keeps the whole aspect of the sea that the name Sirena has.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about then you must read this.

Another name that we really like is Sofia, because we find it “sweet sounding”.  It means “Wisdom”. And it goes very well with the name Sirena or Seanna.

Anyways, we are interested in knowing what you guys think, here are the choices and combinations of the names:

What should we name our daughter?

  • Sofia Sirena (23%, 10 Votes)
  • Sirena Venezia (23%, 10 Votes)
  • Sirena Sofia (20%, 9 Votes)
  • Sofia Seanna (7%, 4 Votes)

I think that it’s really going to come down to the wire.  We really love all 4 names.  When the baby is born sometime this week and the nurse gives me the paperwork to fill out, I hope I don’t blank out and put some other random name instead.

*Also, I’m going to have a live webcam at the hospital that give a live feed of the baby once she’s born so stay tuned*

Baby Names

In thinking of a baby name for our daughter, there have been only two that have stuck with us.  When we chose her name, I wanted something that was symbolic or poetic.  I feel that names cannot be determined based on just what it sounds like, but also what they mean.  I wanted to name her something relating to the Sea.  You see, when Monica was pregnant and we didn’t know it, we had gone to Puerto Rico for our usual Valentine’s Day getaway, and there we went scuba diving.  So in essence, our daughter, our beloved child, was swimming in the depths of the seas along the giant whales that, hidden from view, somewhere far away, slowly traveled its ancient roads; the ancient turtles who know the mysteries of its dark blue nights, and the echoing of playful dolphins in the distant shades of the ocean.  We were 90ft deep and the clear waters had turned to fascinating deep blue shade, and there she was swimming with us, without us knowing.  And we think about that, often, and only one name comes to mind:  Sirena.  We have chosen to name her Sirena.  Sirena, which literal translation is Mermaid.  She was a little mermaid, swimming in the sea.

We know it’s an unusual name.  But I cannot think of any other name that will suit her –except for her middle name: Venezia.  Venice, or Venezia as it written in Italian, is where we originate.  Let me explain, as most of you know, Monica and I got engaged in Venice.  And I like to think of that moment as the moment when God had chosen for us to get engaged.  That is when and where we took our relationship to a deeper level.  To us, Venice will always be a special place.  And one thing that I told Monica was that “We will always have Venice.”  And so, we have decided for Sirena’s middle name to be Venezia, after the city of water, of canals, of gondolas, of romance and as a symbol to us of God’s timing and provision, because it was He who provided us with the trip and money to get there.

Sirena Venezia Downs.   It feels good to know her name.  And address her by it, not by “baby” anymore, but by the names we have chosen for her.
